about me

What video formats can you work with?

HDCAM, HDCAM EX, AVC-INTRA, AVC-HD, DVC Pro HD, DVCAM, HDV, DV, Digital Betacam, DVD, VHS. Please note that any tape based format (other than HDV, MiniDV and VHS) will require a deck hire.

How do we show cuts to the clients remotely?

There are a number of ways to achieve this, but the easiest option is for me to upload cuts to the web using a password protected YouTube account. Once the cut has been uploaded I simply send you and your clients a link that will take them straight to the cut via their web browser. On request I can provide approval versions that will play on iPhones and other mobile devices.

Files can also be send directly to clients using a service such as YouSendIt.

Can I sit-in on the edit?

You are more than welcome to sit-in on the edit. I have a nice selection of teas, coffees and biscuits, but you may have to share my small room with a grumpy cat.

Can I start at your edit facility and then move to another?

The short answer is yes. However, this requires some careful technical considerations so it needs some discussion before the edit begins.

How can I connect to you during the edit?

Using Skype is the best method. This means that you can join me in the edit for live updates. Search for mrwright.tv and add me. You can get the latest version of Skype here.

Can you encode clips for YouTube and Facebook?

Yes. I can provide you with almost any video format required.

What is a typical edit workflow?

Rushes are delivered or collected on either a Hard Disk, Panasonic P2 Cards, Sony SxS PRO Cards, Canon 5D/7D or on tape (deck hire may be needed) These are ingested and logged into either Avid Media Composer or Final Cut Pro. A first cut is produced and uploaded for the producer/director to see. Animation and graphics are normally produced alongside the edit. Edit progress is uploaded to the internet for client feedback. Client approves the cut and deliverables are discussed. The project is delivered and backed-up as required.

Do you back-up the projects when they are complete?

When a project has been completed I will keep a mirrored copy of the project files and the final video as a QuickTime file. However, digitised media (which often amounts to hundreds of gigabytes of storage space) is deleted soon after job completion to make room for the next project. I therefore recommend that clients purchase a low cost hard drive and back up all of the media and project files onto this for future safety.

Do you do animation and 3D graphics?

Basic titling and graphics are available in both Avid and Final Cut Pro. But more elaborate graphics and 3D animations can be farmed out to animators that I can recommend or you can bring in your own people. The Remote editing: an introduction animation was produced by FatRobot, check out some of his work here.

What about grading and sound finishing?

Colour correction and sound finishing can all be carried out at mr.wright’s and is ideal for producers delivering on DVD, projection or web based platforms. If you are producing for broadcast or looking for a very specific look, I strongly recommend taking the final edit to a finishing facility. Grading is very much about an experienced colourist who uses costly and highly calibrated equipment in an environment specifically designed for the job.

The same is true of sound. In Avid and Final Cut Pro you are able to do a fair amount of creative soundwork, but if the sound was recorded in a noisey environement or with a lot of mixed sources, such as radio and boom mic, it may benifit from an additional sound finish. It is worth discussing your needs before shooting.

Any tips for making things go smoother?

1. Try to get music signed off as soon as possible. Especially if it is the building blocks of the edit.

2. Discuss deliverables as early as possible and allow for these in your production schedule. DVD builds and multiple file encodes all take time to create.

3. If you are using archive footage, try to arrange this long before your edit.

5. If you intend to sit in on the edit, please bring Jaffa Cakes.
